Xylem And Phloem

Overview

A tall tree pulls hundreds of litres of water up from its roots and sends sugar made in its leaves down to its roots, all without a heart or a pump. It does this through two specialised transport tissues running like pipework through every root, stem and leaf: the xylem and the phloem.

In this lesson you will learn exactly what each tissue carries and where to find them in a plant. Extended students will see how the structure of a xylem vessel, hollow, lignified and joined end to end, makes it a perfect water pipe.

Objectives

  1. [Core] State the functions of xylem and phloem: (a) xylem - transport of water and mineral ions, and support (b) phloem - transport of sucrose and amino acids
  2. [Core] Identify in diagrams and images the position of xylem and phloem as seen in sections of roots, stems and leaves of non-woody dicotyledonous plants

Lesson Note

Plants have no blood and no heart, yet they move water and food over long distances. Xylem and phloem are the answer, and they appear again and again across transpiration, translocation and leaf structure. Knowing what each carries, and where they sit in root, stem and leaf, underpins a whole section of the syllabus.
