The Management Of Urban Growth

Overview

A city does not have to drown in its own growth. With good planning, the same forces that fill streets with traffic and edges with shacks can be channelled into decent homes, working transport and a cleaner environment. Around the world, governments, councils and communities are testing strategies to manage urban growth so that cities become more liveable and more sustainable.

In this lesson you will learn the main strategies used to manage urban growth, from upgrading informal settlements and building affordable housing to improving public transport, managing waste and protecting green space, and how to judge which ones really work. You will then study one named city in detail so you can write a full case study in the exam.

Objectives

  1. An evaluation of the strategies and techniques used to manage urban growth; including sustainable.
  2. One detailed specific example of a named urban area to include: • causes of urban growth • challenges and opportunities brought about by urban growth • the strategies and techniques used to manage urban growth; including sustainable.

Lesson Note

This topic carries a compulsory case study, and case study questions are worth the most marks on the paper. You need both a toolkit of general strategies you can evaluate and one named city you know in real detail. Examiners reward specific places, schemes and figures, not vague promises to build more houses.
