Promotion:

Overview

A great product that nobody has heard of will not sell. Promotion is how a business tells customers it exists, persuades them to buy, and keeps them coming back, but it costs money, so every dollar must work hard.

In this lesson you will learn the aims of promotion, the main forms it takes, advertising and sales promotion, and how each influences sales. You will also learn why a business must spend its promotion budget cost-effectively, getting the most extra sales for the least cost.

Objectives

  1. The aims of promotion
  2. Different forms of promotion and how they influence sales, e.g. advertising, sales promotion
  3. The need for cost-effectiveness in spending the marketing budget on promotion

Lesson Note

Promotion turns a good product into actual sales. Done well, it raises awareness, builds a brand and lifts revenue; done badly, it wastes money a business may not be able to afford. Because budgets are limited, examiners often ask you to judge whether a method is worth its cost, so cost-effectiveness is the key idea.
