Mathematics Specification A - 4MA1 PearsonEdexcel

Applying Number

Overview

Mathematics gains its power when applied to real situations. Whether you are converting currencies for a holiday, calculating how long a journey takes, or working out how much paint to buy, you need fluent number skills combined with knowledge of units.

This topic covers practical calculations with units of mass, length, area, volume and capacity, time arithmetic including the 24-hour clock, and money problems involving currency exchange. These skills appear across both papers and connect to almost every other topic in the specification.

Objectives

  1. Use and apply number in everyday personal, domestic or community life
  2. Carry out calculations using standard units of mass, length, area, volume and capacity
  3. Understand and carry out calculations using time, and carry out calculations using money, including converting between currencies

Lesson Note

Every time you read a recipe, check a bus timetable, or compare prices in different currencies, you apply number skills. The key is knowing which operation to use and which unit the answer should carry.
