Powers And Roots

Overview

Powers and roots give you a compact way to express repeated multiplication and to reverse it. From squaring a side length to find an area, to using index laws to simplify algebraic expressions, these skills run through almost every topic in the Edexcel IGCSE specification.

You will build fluency with squares, cubes and their roots, master the index laws for integer powers, and learn to decompose numbers into prime factors for finding HCF and LCM. Higher tier students will extend this to surds and fractional indices.

Objectives

  1. Identify square numbers and cube numbers
  2. Calculate squares, square roots, cubes and cube roots
  3. Use index notation and index laws for multiplication and division of positive and negative integer powers including zero
  4. Express integers as a product of powers of prime factors
  5. Find highest common factors (HCF) and lowest common multiples (LCM)
  6. [Higher] Understand the meaning of surds
  7. [Higher] Manipulate surds, including rationalising a denominator
  8. [Higher] Use index laws to simplify and evaluate numerical expressions involving integer, fractional and negative powers

Lesson Note

Every time you calculate the area of a square or the volume of a cube, you are using powers. Every time you reverse that calculation to find a side length, you are using roots. These two ideas, raising to a power and extracting a root, are mirror images of each other, and the index laws that govern them unlock shortcuts across algebra, number theory and beyond.
