Chemical Formulae And Equations

Overview

Chemistry has its own shorthand. Instead of writing 'two hydrogen atoms bond with one oxygen atom to make water', chemists write H₂O. Instead of describing a reaction in a paragraph, they write a balanced equation that shows exactly what reacts and what is produced.

In this lesson you will learn how to write word equations and balanced symbol equations with state symbols, and how to calculate relative formula masses from relative atomic masses. These skills underpin almost every calculation you will meet in chemistry.

  1. Write word equations and balanced chemical equations (including state symbols) for reactions studied in this specification and for unfamiliar reactions where suitable information is provided
  2. Calculate relative formula masses (including relative molecular masses) (Mr) from relative atomic masses (Ar)

Lesson Note
