The Natural And Human Causes Of Climate Change

Overview

The Earth has always had a changing climate. Ice ages have come and gone, sea ice has advanced and retreated, and ancient paintings even show frost fairs held on a frozen River Thames. So how do we know that the warming happening today is different, and that human activity is the cause? This lesson teaches you to read the evidence for yourself.

You will learn how scientists reconstruct past climates from ice cores and temperature records, how natural forces such as orbital wobbles, sunspots and volcanic eruptions nudge the climate, and how burning fossil fuels, clearing forests and farming have strengthened the greenhouse effect far faster than nature ever could.

Objectives

  1. Evidence of climate change: global temperature data, ice cores, sea ice positions, historic writing and paintings.
  2. Factors influencing natural climate change: orbital changes (Milankovitch cycles), sunspots, volcanic activity.
  3. The human influence on the atmosphere causing the enhanced greenhouse effect. For example, the use of fossil fuels, deforestation, agriculture.

Lesson Note

Climate change is one of the defining issues of your generation, and it is a guaranteed examiner favourite. To answer well you must do two things: show how we know the climate is changing (the evidence), and separate the natural causes that have always operated from the human activities that have sharpened the change since the Industrial Revolution. Get those two ideas clear and the topic falls into place.
