Movement And Position

Overview

From a car braking at traffic lights to a sprinter powering out of the blocks, everything around you involves objects changing position over time. Learning how to describe that motion with numbers, equations and graphs is the starting point for all of mechanics - and one of the most tested skills in your Edexcel Science exam.

This lesson covers average speed, acceleration, distance-time graphs and velocity-time graphs. You will practise reading gradients and areas from graphs, use the key equations of motion, and build the confidence to tackle calculation questions worth up to eight marks on Papers 1 and 2.

Objectives

  1. Plot and explain distance-time graphs
  2. Know and use the relationship between average speed, distance moved and time taken
  3. Investigate the motion of everyday objects such as toy cars or tennis balls
  4. Know and use the relationship between acceleration, change in velocity and time taken
  5. Plot and explain velocity-time graphs
  6. Determine acceleration from the gradient of a velocity-time graph
  7. Determine the distance travelled from the area between a velocity-time graph and the time axis

Lesson Note

A satellite orbits the Earth at 7,800 m/s. A garden snail crawls at about 0.001 m/s. Both are in motion, but clearly not in the same way. Physics gives you a precise toolkit - speed, velocity, acceleration and graphs - to describe any motion, compare one with another, and predict what happens next.
