Types Of Digital Devices

Overview

Look around any room and you will find digital devices everywhere: a smartphone in your pocket, a laptop on the desk, a microprocessor quietly running the washing machine. Understanding the different categories of device, what each one does best, and how they connect is the starting point for every topic in this course.

This lesson introduces the full range of digital devices on the Edexcel specification, from mainframe computers and personal computers to tablets, games consoles, navigation aids, and home entertainment systems. You will also learn why modern devices can do so many things at once, through the ideas of multifunctionality and convergence.

Objectives

  1. Be aware that mainframe computers are used for complex processing tasks and microprocessors are embedded in products such as washing machines
  2. Understand that laptop and desktop computers are types of personal computers, and some laptops are used as desktop replacements
  3. Know about types of mobile phones, smartphones and specialist phones and how they connect to the network (SIM)
  4. Know about tablet devices
  5. Be able to describe the purpose and use of other digital devices such as cameras and camcorders, games consoles, home entertainment systems and media players
  6. Know about navigation aids and how they are used
  7. Understand the terms 'multifunctional' and 'convergence' in the context of digital devices

Lesson Note

Fifty years ago a computer filled an entire room and served one task. Today a device that fits in your hand can browse the web, take photographs, play games, and navigate you across a city. The shift happened because processors became smaller, cheaper, and more powerful, allowing digital technology to spread into almost every product we use. To make sense of this landscape, you need to know the main categories of digital device, the jobs each one is designed for, and the features that set them apart.
