Stars And The Universe

Overview

The Sun looks unique because it is ours, but it is a fairly ordinary star: a vast ball of hot gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, pouring out energy across space. That energy is made deep in its core by joining hydrogen nuclei together, the same process that powers every star you see at night.

In this lesson you will learn that the Sun is a medium-sized star made mostly of hydrogen and helium that radiates most of its energy as infrared, visible light and ultraviolet, and that stars are powered by nuclear reactions, with stable stars like the Sun fusing hydrogen into helium.

Objectives

  1. Know that the Sun is a star of medium size, consisting mostly of hydrogen and helium, and that it radiates most of its energy in the infrared, visible light and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum
  2. [Supplement] Know that stars are powered by nuclear reactions that release energy and that in stable stars the nuclear reactions involve the fusion of hydrogen into helium

Lesson Note

The Sun drives almost all of Earth's energy, from sunlight and weather to the fossil fuels and food that store its energy. Understanding that the Sun is a typical star powered by nuclear fusion connects astronomy to the nuclear physics you have already met, and these short facts are reliable exam marks if stated precisely.
