Software

Overview

Every time you tap an icon on your phone or type a command into a terminal, you are relying on software to translate your intention into something the hardware can act on. Without it, even the most powerful processor is just an expensive piece of silicon.

This topic explores the two broad families of software, systems software and applications software, and the jobs each one does. You will learn how operating systems manage resources behind the scenes, why utility programs keep your machine healthy, what separates open-source from proprietary licensing, and why keeping software up to date matters for security and performance.

Objectives

  1. Be able to identify the purpose of systems software and applications software
  2. Know about operating systems and system software tools such as utilities
  3. Know about the role and function of the operating system, including basic knowledge of single user and network, memory management, resource management, security, print spooling
  4. Know about software applications (apps), including office-productivity tools, web authoring, image and sound editing, presentation software, control software, project management software
  5. Know about software licensing types (free/open source and proprietary software)
  6. Understand that the purpose of communication software is to provide remote access to systems and to exchange files and messages in text, images, audio and/or video formats between different computers or users
  7. Know why software is updated, how it is done and possible risks to data/systems

Lesson Note

When you turn on a computer, the screen lights up, icons appear, and within moments you are browsing or typing. None of that happens by accident. A carefully layered stack of programs loads in sequence, each one preparing the way for the next, until the machine is ready for you. Understanding that stack, from the low-level firmware to the app you see on screen, is the first step to understanding how all digital devices work.
