Art and Design: Graphic Communication - 4GC1 PearsonEdexcel

Multi-media

Overview

Every other area of study in this endorsement gives you a surface. Multi-media gives you a surface and a clock. Once work unfolds over time, you are no longer only deciding what things look like but when they arrive, how long they stay, what the viewer hears while they are there, and what the silence just before them was for. Time is a material, and it is the one students most often forget to design.

This note covers combining moving image, sound and graphics into a single timed piece: storyboards and animatics, tracks and keyframes, the timing and spacing that make a movement feel weighted, type that has to be readable in the seconds it is on screen, sound that carries half the meaning, and the awkward modern reality that most of your audience will watch with the sound off. You will study title sequences and hand-made film that still set the standard.

Objectives

  1. Use traditional and non-traditional media to communicate ideas for a range of purposes and audiences
  2. Combine a range of multi-media materials, tools and techniques such as motion graphics, lens-based and digital video, animation and recording in screen-based technology

Lesson Note

The specification describes this area as combining traditional and non-traditional media to communicate ideas, using motion graphics, lens-based and digital video, animation and recorded sound in screen-based technology. In practice that means title sequences, short films and idents, animated explanations, music videos, projection and installation pieces, and animated social content. What they share is that they are authored in time: you decide the order and the duration, and the viewer watches.
