Types Of Markets

Overview

Some markets have hundreds of small firms fighting for customers; others are dominated by one or two giants. How competitive a market is shapes the price you pay, the quality you get and the choice you enjoy.

In this lesson you will learn the characteristics of a competitive market, weigh its advantages and disadvantages, and see how a high number of firms affects price, quality, choice and profit. By the end you will be able to judge how the level of competition serves consumers.

Objectives

  1. characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of competitive markets
  2. effect of having a high number of firms on price, quality, choice, profit

Lesson Note

The number of firms in a market is not a dry detail: it decides whether you face high prices and take-it-or-leave-it service, or low prices and plenty of choice. Comparing competitive markets with concentrated ones is how economists judge whether consumers are being well served, and it is a favourite exam theme.
