Fractions, Decimals And Percentages

Overview

Fractions, decimals and percentages are three ways of writing the same thing: a part of a whole. Being able to switch fluently between them is one of the most useful number skills there is, because some calculations are easier as fractions and others as decimals or percentages.

In this lesson you will use the correct language for proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, decimals and percentages, and convert confidently between all three forms. This fluency underpins percentages, ratio, probability and much of the number work to come.

Objectives

  1. Use the language and notation of the following in appropriate contexts: proper fractions improper fractions mixed numbers decimals percentages.
  2. Recognise equivalence and convert between these forms.

Lesson Note

A fraction, a decimal and a percentage can all describe the same amount, and choosing the easiest form for the job saves time and errors. Conversions between them appear in almost every paper.
