Characteristics Of Living Organisms

Overview

What separates a rock from a rabbit? Both are made of atoms, both sit on the same planet, yet only one feeds, grows and reproduces. Biologists use a set of eight life processes to draw the line between living and non-living, and every organism on Earth, from a tiny bacterium to a blue whale, shares them all.

In this lesson you will learn each of the eight characteristics, explore how they apply to both plants and animals, and discover why viruses sit awkwardly outside the definition of life. These ideas underpin every biology topic that follows, so getting them right here gives you a head start for the rest of the course.

Objectives

  1. Understand how living organisms share the following characteristics: they require nutrition, they respire, they excrete their waste, they respond to their surroundings, they move, they control their internal conditions, they reproduce, they grow and develop

Lesson Note

A candle flame moves, a crystal grows, and a river responds to rain. None of them is alive. The difference is that living organisms carry out all eight life processes simultaneously and continuously, not just one or two in isolation. Understanding these processes is the first step in biology, and it turns up in exam questions more often than most students expect.
