Algebraic Fractions

Overview

Algebraic fractions are fractions whose numerators and denominators contain letters. They behave exactly like ordinary fractions, but factorising first often reveals a common factor that cancels, turning a fearsome-looking expression into something simple.

In this lesson (Extended tier) you will simplify algebraic fractions by factorising and cancelling, and add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions.

Objectives

  1. Manipulate algebraic fractions.
  2. Factorise and simplify rational expressions.

Lesson Note

The same fraction rules you know from arithmetic carry straight over to algebra. Factorising to cancel is the key extra step, and it appears throughout Extended algebra.
