Physics: Magnetism And Electromagnetism: Units

Overview

An electromagnet, a loudspeaker and an electric motor are all described by just three units: the ampere, the volt and the watt. Between them they answer how much charge is flowing, how hard it is being pushed, and how fast energy is being delivered.

In this lesson you will meet each of the three, see how the volt and the watt are built out of simpler units, practise the prefix conversions that appear on every device label, and use units as a quick check that a calculation has been set up the right way round.

Look at the rating plate on any electrical appliance and the same three symbols keep appearing: A, V and W. A cordless drill might be marked 18 V and 300 W; a small motor might be marked 0.5 A. These are not interchangeable ways of saying how powerful something is. Each measures a genuinely different quantity, and this section of the course depends on keeping them apart.
