Measuring Commercial Performance

Overview

Every commercial enterprise needs a way to judge whether it is thriving, treading water, or heading for trouble. Profit figures alone never tell the whole story, so accountants and managers turn raw numbers into ratios that reveal how efficiently a business converts sales into profit and how well it uses the capital invested in it.

In this lesson you will learn to calculate and interpret the key performance ratios that Edexcel expects you to master: gross profit margin, net profit margin, expenses as a percentage of turnover, and return on capital employed. You will practise applying each formula, comparing results across time periods and between competitors, and explaining what the numbers mean for commercial decision-making.

Objectives

  1. Understand the concept and calculation of gross profit margin, profit for the year (net profit) margin, expenses as a percentage of turnover, Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

Lesson Note

Two bakeries both report a profit of $50,000 this year. Does that mean they performed equally well? Not necessarily. One might have generated that profit from $200,000 of revenue while the other needed $1,000,000 of sales to reach the same figure. Performance ratios cut through the headline numbers and show how hard every dollar of revenue is really working.
