Overview

Carbon is the backbone of every organic molecule, yet there is only a fixed amount of it on Earth. The same carbon atoms that once formed the body of a dinosaur may now be part of a leaf, a lump of coal, or the air you are breathing out right now.

In this lesson you will trace the carbon cycle through its four main stages: photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition and combustion. You will see how carbon moves between the atmosphere, living organisms and fossil fuels, and why human activity is disrupting the balance.

Lesson Note

Unlike energy, which flows through an ecosystem and is eventually lost as heat, chemical elements are recycled again and again. Carbon is the most important of these because it forms the backbone of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and DNA. The carbon cycle describes how carbon atoms move between the atmosphere, living organisms, the soil and fossil fuels over time.
