Developing And Expanding Responses
Overview
The difference between an average speaking mark and a strong one is rarely fancy vocabulary or perfect grammar. It is development: the habit of answering a question and then keeping going, adding a reason, an example, a feeling, a what-if. Examiners say it plainly. The candidates who score well are the ones who develop their ideas at length, while weaker ones give a single sentence and stop, waiting for the examiner to rescue them with another question.
This note gives you a simple, repeatable way to expand any answer and to push a topic forward yourself. You will learn the moves that lengthen a reply without padding it, how to turn an opinion into a small argument, and how to hand the conversation back to the examiner in a way that invites more.
