Group VII Properties

Overview

The Group VII halogens are a striking family of coloured, reactive non-metals: a pale yellow-green gas, a red-brown liquid and a grey-black solid, all sitting in the same column of the periodic table. They are the mirror image of the Group I metals, with a reactivity that falls, rather than rises, as you go down the group.

In this lesson you will learn the appearance of chlorine, bromine and iodine at room temperature, the trends in density and reactivity, and the displacement reactions that prove the order of reactivity. More than that, you will understand why the trend runs the way it does, so you can predict how an unfamiliar halogen will behave and justify it like an examiner.

Objectives

  1. Describe the Group VII halogens, chlorine, bromine and iodine, as diatomic non-metals with general trends down the group, limited to: (a) increasing density (b) decreasing reactivity.
  2. State the appearance of the halogens at r.t.p. as: (a) chlorine, a pale yellow-green gas (b) bromine, a red-brown liquid (c) iodine, a grey-black solid.
  3. Describe and explain the displacement reactions of halogens with other halide ions.
  4. Predict the properties of other elements in Group VII, given information about the elements.

Lesson Note

The halogens show off the periodic table's patterns from the non-metal side. Their colours and physical states make them memorable, and their displacement reactions give clear, visible evidence of which halogen is more reactive. Chlorine alone keeps drinking water and swimming pools safe for millions of people. In the exam, Group VII questions reliably ask you to recall appearances, state a trend, and explain a displacement reaction, so the reasoning here earns real marks.
