How Far Did US Society Change In The 1920s?

Overview

The 1920s are remembered as the Roaring Twenties: a decade of jazz, the cinema, dancing flappers and a new sense of freedom for many young Americans. Cars gave people independence, the radio carried the same music into every home, and Hollywood turned actors into the first global stars. To many it felt as if the old rules were being swept away.

Yet the same decade saw Prohibition and the gangsters it created, a revived Ku Klux Klan, a Red Scare against suspected communists, the near closing of the door on immigration, and a bitter clash between science and religion. This lesson asks how far society really changed. You will learn to set the glamour of the Roaring Twenties against the intolerance of the same years and to reach a balanced judgement.

Objectives

  1. What were the ‘Roaring Twenties’?
  2. How widespread was intolerance in US society?
  3. Why was Prohibition introduced, and then later repealed?
  4. How far did the roles of women change during the 1920s?

Lesson Note

Social history is rarely a single story, and the 1920s prove it. Two Americas existed at once: a modern, urban, liberated one and a traditional, fearful, intolerant one. Cambridge questions on this topic almost always ask how far things changed, which means you must hold both pictures in your mind and weigh them. Mastering this balance is the difference between a narrative answer and an argued one.
