Water Pollution

Overview

Water is the universal solvent, which is exactly why it is so easily polluted. Almost anything we spill, flush or wash away ends up dissolved or suspended in a river, lake or sea. A single careless factory outfall can poison a fishery; a field of fertiliser can suffocate a whole lake; untreated sewage can spark an outbreak of deadly disease. Clean water is precious, and keeping it clean is one of the central problems of environmental management.

In this lesson you will learn where water pollution comes from, how it harms both people and ecosystems, and what can be done about it. You will follow the sinister chain of eutrophication, see how toxic chemicals build up inside living things and magnify up a food chain, and weigh the strategies, from better sanitation to tough laws, that keep our water fit to use.

Objectives

  1. 3.2.1 Describe the sources of water pollution, limited to: (a) domestic waste (b) sewage (c) plastic waste (d) industrial processes (e) agricultural practices.
  2. 3.2.2 Describe and explain the impacts of water pollution on people and on the environment, limited to: (a) risk of infectious bacterial diseases: cholera (b) accumulation of toxic substances from industrial processes (c) bioaccumulation of toxic substances in a single organism over time (d) biomagnification of toxic substances as they increase in concentration as they are passed up a food chain (e) the effect of acid rain on organisms in rivers and lakes (f) leaching and nutrient enrichment from organic content and inorganic ions leading to eutrophication.
  3. 3.2.3 Describe strategies for improving water quality, limited to: (a) improved sanitation (b) treatment of sewage (c) pollution control and legislation.

Lesson Note

More people die each year from unsafe water than from war. Water pollution spreads disease, destroys fisheries that feed millions, and damages ecosystems that can take decades to recover. Examiners expect you to follow the full story: the sources of pollution, the impacts on people and the environment, and the strategies used to improve water quality.
