Analysing Language And Structure
Overview
Twenty per cent of this qualification rests on one question: not what the writer said, but how, and what it does to you. That is the heaviest single reading objective on the paper, and it is also the one where the gap between a competent answer and an excellent one is widest. Competent answers name devices. Excellent answers explain what a choice does to a reader who did not know it was being made.
This note trains that second habit. You will work at three zoom levels, from the single word up to the shape of the whole extract, learn to build an analytical sentence that cannot collapse into feature spotting, and give the neglected half of the objective, structure, the attention that examiners keep asking for and rarely get.
