Section B
Overview
The last hour of Paper 2 is one piece of writing worth 40 marks, exactly as much as the five reading questions before it. What makes it different from the composition task on Paper 1 is that here you are told who you are writing for and why. You are entering a public speaking competition, or writing an article for a website, or replying to a writer whose column you have just read. The specification is explicit that the focus of the task is writing for audience and purpose, and that the most successful responses are the ones that answer that demand.
This lesson shows what answering it looks like on the page. You will see the same argument written three times for three different readers, watch a speech opening and an article opening built from nothing, and learn how to lift material out of the Section A sources without letting the sources do your writing for you. The last part matters: every measured task said you may use the sources, and the marks are all for your own prose.
Objectives
- The focus of the writing task will be writing for audience and purpose, which could be both multiple and diverse. The most successful responses will demonstrate the students’ ability to respond to this demand.
