Cycles Within Ecosystems

Overview

Carbon is the backbone of every organic molecule in every living organism, yet there is a fixed amount of it on Earth. The carbon cycle describes how this element moves continuously between the atmosphere, living organisms, the oceans, and the ground, recycled over and over again.

In this lesson you will trace carbon through the four key processes that drive the cycle: photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and combustion. Understanding the carbon cycle also helps explain why burning fossil fuels is altering the composition of the atmosphere.

Lesson Note

Every atom of carbon in your body was once in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. A plant absorbed it during photosynthesis, an animal ate the plant, and eventually the carbon reached you through food. When you breathe out, some of that carbon returns to the air as CO₂. This endless loop is the carbon cycle.
