Movement And Position

Overview

Understanding how objects move is the foundation of all mechanics. Whether you are tracking a sprinter on a track or a car on a highway, the same equations and graphs describe the motion.

In this lesson you will learn how to calculate speed and acceleration, read and plot distance-time and velocity-time graphs, and use the equations of motion to solve problems about objects that speed up, slow down or move at constant velocity.

Objectives

  1. Plot and explain distance-time graphs
  2. Know and use the relationship between average speed, distance moved and time taken
  3. Investigate the motion of everyday objects such as toy cars or tennis balls
  4. Know and use the relationship between acceleration, change in velocity and time taken
  5. Plot and explain velocity-time graphs
  6. Determine acceleration from the gradient of a velocity-time graph
  7. Determine the distance travelled from the area between a velocity-time graph and the time axis
  8. Use the relationship between final speed, initial speed, acceleration and distance moved

Lesson Note

A car pulling away from traffic lights, a ball rolling to a stop, a cyclist cruising at a steady pace - each of these can be described precisely with just a few quantities: distance, time, speed and acceleration. Get comfortable with these, and the rest of mechanics follows naturally.
