Research And Development
Overview
Put two sketchbooks side by side. The first is full: printed images of famous paintings, neat borders, a careful copy of a Van Gogh, a paragraph about the artist's life. The second is messier: eleven drawings of the same corner of a kitchen made at different times of day, three of them crossed out, a strip of charcoal tests on grey paper, and a note in the margin that says the fourth one lost the light because the paper was too white. The second book will be marked higher, and the reason is worth understanding properly.
Research and development in Fine Art is not a folder of reference material collected before the real work starts. It is the work: looking at first hand, drawing to find out rather than to finish, testing one material against another with a question in mind, and leaving the evidence of your thinking where a examiner can see it. This note takes you through what that looks like on paper, including the artist study that gets misunderstood more often than any other part of the course.
Objectives
- Undertake visual research, using primary and secondary sources, and record observations, experiences and ideas in appropriate ways, including first-hand experience of original work
- Develop and realise ideas and outcomes, exploring and reviewing possible solutions and modifying work appropriately
- Understand and use (appropriately and safely) a range of materials, equipment, processes and techniques in two- and/or three dimensions, using information and communication technology where appropriate
- Know and understand a range of work, from contemporary practice, past practice and different cultures, in order to demonstrate an understanding of continuity and change in art, craft and design
