Proposing
Overview
With a clear specification in hand, the designer finally starts to generate solutions. Proposing is the most visibly creative stage: it is where a wide range of distinct, imaginative and innovative ideas pour onto the page as annotated sketches. But creativity here is not just throwing out drawings; it is generating genuinely different ideas and then evaluating each one honestly against the specification to choose the strongest to take forward.
This note shows you how to sketch and annotate a rich spread of ideas that are truly distinct rather than minor variations of one idea, how to use creative techniques to break out of the obvious, and how to evaluate and explore each proposal against the specification so your choice of solution is reasoned and defensible rather than a matter of personal taste.
