Linear Equations

Overview

A linear equation is an equation in which the highest power of the unknown is 1. Solving a linear equation means finding the value of the unknown that makes both sides equal. This skill runs through almost every area of the Edexcel IGCSE specification: from number problems and geometry to statistics and probability, you will regularly need to form and solve linear equations.

This lesson builds from single-step equations through to multi-step problems involving brackets and fractions. You will also practise translating word problems into equations, a skill that Edexcel tests frequently on both papers.

Objectives

  1. Solve linear equations, with integer or fractional coefficients, in one unknown in which the unknown appears on either side or both sides of the equation
  2. Set up simple linear equations from given data

Lesson Note

Imagine you buy some identical notebooks and pay a total of \(\pounds 12\). If each notebook costs \(\pounds 3\), how many did you buy? You are already solving the equation \(3x = 12\). A linear equation always has an unknown raised to the power of 1 and its graph is a straight line, but right now the focus is on finding the value that balances both sides.
