Linear Equations
Overview
A linear equation is an equation in which the highest power of the unknown is 1. Solving a linear equation means finding the value of the unknown that makes both sides equal. This skill runs through almost every area of the Edexcel IGCSE specification: from number problems and geometry to statistics and probability, you will regularly need to form and solve linear equations.
This lesson builds from single-step equations through to multi-step problems involving brackets and fractions. You will also practise translating word problems into equations, a skill that Edexcel tests frequently on both papers.
Objectives
- Solve linear equations, with integer or fractional coefficients, in one unknown in which the unknown appears on either side or both sides of the equation
- Set up simple linear equations from given data
