Limits Of Accuracy

Overview

Every measurement is rounded, so the value you are given is never quite exact. Limits of accuracy tell you the range the true value could lie in. This matters whenever rounded measurements are added, subtracted or used in a calculation, because the small uncertainties combine.

In this lesson you will find the upper and lower bounds of a value rounded to a given accuracy, and (at Extended) find the bounds of the result of a calculation that uses rounded data.

Objectives

  1. Give upper and lower bounds for data rounded to a specified accuracy.
  2. Find upper and lower bounds of the results of calculations which have used data rounded to a specified accuracy. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

Knowing the bounds of a measurement tells you how much you can trust a result. Examiners test this directly, and it is the basis of error and tolerance in science and engineering.
