Cell Structure

Overview

Every living organism, from the smallest bacterium to the tallest tree, is built from cells. Understanding how cells are structured is the foundation of biology: once you know what sits inside a cell and what each part does, you can explain how organisms feed, grow, respire and reproduce.

In this lesson you will learn the structures found in animal and plant cells, discover what makes them different, and explore how cell differentiation produces the specialised cells that multicellular organisms depend on. You will also weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of using stem cells in medicine.

Lesson Note

Every cell is a self-contained unit surrounded by a boundary. Inside that boundary, specialised structures called organelles carry out the chemical reactions that keep the cell alive. Some organelles are shared by all cells; others are unique to plants. Knowing which structures are present, and what they do, lets you explain everything from why leaves are green to why muscles need a steady supply of oxygen.
