How Pearson Edexcel reports results on the 9-1 scale

Every Edexcel IGCSE result is reported as a single number from 9 (the highest) to 1 (the lowest pass), with U for ungraded. This system replaced the older A* to G letter grades across most subjects from 2019 onwards, bringing the International GCSE into line with the reformed GCSE in England. The shift was not a change in difficulty or standards; it was a change in labelling, designed to make it clearer where each student sits within the cohort.

The key insight is that the old A* has been split. Previously, every student above the A boundary received an A*. Under the 9-1 system, the top band is divided into grade 9 and grade 8, giving finer resolution at the top.   • A to C: generally considered good passes, with C traditionally viewed as the benchmark for a satisfactory result.
  • D to G: lower passes, still indicating some level of achievement.
  • U: ungraded.

In any case, the principle is the same: the grade reflects performance relative to the difficulty of that particular exam session, not a fixed percentage.

What grade boundaries are and how they are set

Grade boundaries are the minimum raw marks required for each grade in a given exam session. They are not predetermined. They are set after the exams have been sat and marked, by a panel of senior examiners who review the papers, the mark scheme and the distribution of candidate performance.

The process works like this. When Pearson writes an exam paper, they aim for a consistent level of demand from session to session. But no two papers are identical, and small variations in difficulty are inevitable. If a paper turns out to be slightly harder than intended, the grade boundaries are lowered so that students are not penalised. If a paper is slightly easier, the boundaries rise. The goal is for a student of a given ability to receive the same grade regardless of which session they sit.

Grade boundaries are not fixed percentages. A grade 7 might require 65% of the total marks in one session and 70% in the next. This is by design, not a flaw. This table (which uses illustrative numbers, not real boundaries) tells you that a student needed 155 out of 180 marks for a grade 9, 140 for a grade 8, and so on. The overall mark is typically the sum of all component marks. In subjects with two papers, each paper has its own maximum mark, and the boundaries are set on the combined total.

Some subjects publish component-level boundaries as well as an overall boundary. For exam preparation, the overall boundary is what determines the final grade. Component boundaries, where available, can help a student understand how their performance on each paper maps to the overall picture.

Why boundaries move between sessions

Three factors drive the movement of grade boundaries:

  1. Paper difficulty. A slightly harder paper produces lower raw scores across the cohort. The boundaries drop to compensate, so a student of the same ability as last year's grade 7 candidate still gets a grade 7, even if their raw mark is lower.
  2. Cohort performance. The examining panel considers how the current cohort compares to previous cohorts. If a particularly strong or weak group sits the exam, this is accounted for, though the effect is usually small.
  3. Maintaining standards over time. Pearson uses statistical methods and expert judgment to anchor grades across years. The aim is that a grade 7 in 2024 represents the same standard as a grade 7 in 2022, even if the raw mark is different.

The result is that boundaries can vary noticeably from session to session. A swing of five to ten raw marks on the grade 7 boundary between two sessions of the same subject is not unusual. This is exactly why students should not fixate on a specific mark target derived from a past session.

How to use grade boundaries in your revision

Grade boundaries are useful as a rough indicator, not as a precise target. Here is how to use them wisely:

  • After a practice paper: look up the grade boundaries for that specific session's paper. If you scored 120 out of 180 and the grade 6 boundary was 108 while the grade 7 was 126, you know you are in the grade 6 band and close to a 7. That tells you where to focus your remaining revision.
  • Across multiple practice papers: if your scores are consistently in the same grade band across several sessions, you have a reliable estimate of your current level. If they fluctuate, the inconsistency tells you something useful too: your performance may be topic-dependent, and the topics where you score lowest are where revision will have the highest return.
  • Never as a fixed target: the boundaries for the session you will sit have not been set yet. Aim to maximise your marks by covering the full syllabus and eliminating recurring errors, rather than aiming for a specific number.

Where to find grade boundaries

Pearson publishes Edexcel IGCSE grade boundaries on its qualifications website, organised by subject and session. They are typically released alongside results, or shortly after. The documents are PDFs, one per session, listing every subject and component. A quick search for "Edexcel IGCSE grade boundaries" followed by the session (e.g. "June 2024") on the Pearson website will take you directly there.

Schools often compile boundaries for their students, but the primary source is always the Pearson website. If a boundary figure appears in a revision guide or on a third-party website, verify it against the official document. Errors in transcription are common.

Tiered subjects and their boundaries

In tiered subjects, such as Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A (4MA1), each tier has its own grade boundary table. Foundation tier papers cover grades 5 to 1, and the boundary table only shows those grades. Higher tier papers cover grades 9 to 4, and their boundary table shows grades 9 through 4. A student sitting Foundation cannot achieve higher than a grade 5, regardless of how well they perform. A student sitting Higher can achieve a grade 4 at minimum, but if their score falls below the grade 4 boundary, they receive a U.

The practical implication is that tier choice matters. A student who is borderline between grade 5 and grade 6 faces a genuine dilemma: sit Foundation and guarantee access to a grade 5 but cap the ceiling, or sit Higher and aim for a 6 or above but risk a U if the paper goes badly.

Most Edexcel IGCSE subjects are untiered. The sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), English Language, humanities and languages all offer a single set of papers where every grade from 9 to 1 is available. Tiering applies only to Mathematics A. Students in untiered subjects do not need to worry about ceiling effects or tier selection.

What a grade means for progression

The IGCSE is a pre-16 qualification. It does not directly qualify a student for university; it qualifies them for post-16 study, which in turn leads to university. For A Level entry, most sixth forms and international schools require a minimum of a grade 5 or 6 in the relevant IGCSE subject. For the International Baccalaureate, IGCSE grades serve as evidence of readiness but are not part of the IB scoring system.

For UK university admissions, some courses specify minimum GCSE or IGCSE grades alongside A Level requirements. Medical schools commonly require a grade 7 or above in IGCSE Mathematics and English Language. In all such cases, the Edexcel IGCSE grade is accepted on the same terms as a domestic GCSE grade.

Interpreting your own results

When results arrive, the certificate shows the grade for each subject. The raw marks are available through the school or through Pearson's results service. Cross-referencing the raw mark against the published grade boundaries lets a student see exactly where they sat in the grade band: comfortably in the middle, just above the boundary, or right at the top and close to the next grade up.

This information is most useful for deciding whether to resit. A student who missed a grade 7 by two marks may well benefit from a resit. A student who missed it by twenty marks needs more revision time, not just another attempt at the same exam. The grade boundary table turns a subjective feeling about performance into a concrete, measurable gap.
