Where are fragile environments?
Fragile environments are found on the margins of more stable biomes, where conditions are already difficult. Causes of desertification

Causes of deforestation
Deforestation is the permanent removal of forest cover, most critically in the tropics. The Amazon rainforest and the forests of Southeast Asia are the most affected regions. Causes include:
- Commercial timber extraction: Logging for hardwood (mahogany, teak) and pulpwood drives large-scale forest clearance.
- Agriculture: Cattle ranching (especially in Brazil) and palm oil plantations (in Indonesia and Malaysia) are the two largest agricultural drivers.
- Mining: Extraction of minerals (gold, iron ore, bauxite) requires clearing forest and often contaminates rivers with chemicals.
- Transport: Roads built to access logging and mining sites open up previously inaccessible forest, enabling further clearance.
- Settlement and HEP: Expanding urban areas and hydroelectric power schemes (which flood vast areas of forest) also contribute.
Natural and human causes of climate change
Climate has always changed naturally. The specification requires three natural mechanisms:
- Milankovitch cycles: Periodic variations in Earth's orbit (eccentricity, axial tilt and precession) alter the amount and distribution of solar energy reaching the surface over cycles of tens of thousands of years.
- Solar variation: The Sun's energy output fluctuates in cycles (such as the 11-year sunspot cycle), affecting global temperatures.
- Volcanism: Large volcanic eruptions inject ash and sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, reflecting sunlight and causing short-term cooling. The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo lowered global temperatures by about 0.5 degrees C for over a year.
Human activities have caused the enhanced greenhouse effect. Industry, transport, energy generation and farming release greenhouse gases (CO2, methane, nitrous oxide) that trap additional heat in the atmosphere, warming the planet beyond what natural processes would produce.
Impacts of desertification

- Increased soil erosion: Without tree roots to hold it in place, soil is washed away by rain, silting up rivers and reducing land fertility.
Impacts of climate change on fragile environments
The specification lists several negative effects:
- Rising sea levels: Thermal expansion and ice-sheet melting threaten low-lying coastal areas and island nations.
- More hazards: Increased frequency and intensity of storms, droughts and floods.
- Ecosystem changes: Species move to new areas or die out as conditions shift; coral reefs bleach as ocean temperatures rise.
- Reduced employment: Agriculture, fishing and tourism are disrupted, reducing income in vulnerable communities.
- Changing settlement patterns: Communities are forced to relocate as land becomes uninhabitable.
- Health and wellbeing challenges: Heat stress, spread of vector-borne diseases (malaria, dengue) and food insecurity all worsen.
Responses to desertification
The specification asks how technology can resolve water-resource shortages in fragile environments. Solutions include drip irrigation (delivering water directly to plant roots with minimal waste), desalination (removing salt from seawater, used in arid countries like Saudi Arabia), borehole drilling (accessing deep groundwater) and water harvesting techniques (collecting and storing rainwater). In the Sahel, simple stone bund terraces (lines of stones across slopes) slow water runoff, allowing more to infiltrate the soil and support crops. These low-technology solutions are often more practical in developing countries than expensive infrastructure.
Responses to deforestation
The specification requires knowledge of sustainable use and management of a rainforest in a named region. The Brazilian Amazon provides the most studied case. Approaches include:
- Selective logging (harvesting only certain trees rather than clear-cutting)
- Agroforestry (growing crops among trees rather than instead of them)
- Protected areas and national parks (restricting commercial activity in designated zones)
- International agreements (such as REDD+, which pays developing countries to keep forests standing)
- Reforestation and afforestation programmes
- Enforcement of logging regulations and satellite monitoring of illegal clearance
Responses to climate change
Responses differ between developed and developing or emerging countries. The fragile environments and climate change Edexcel IGCSE exam expects you to compare these:
Developed country - the United Kingdom: The UK has committed to legally binding carbon reduction targets (the Climate Change Act). Strategies include investment in renewable energy, improved building insulation standards, promotion of electric vehicles, and participation in international agreements such as the Paris Agreement. Developing or emerging country - Bangladesh: Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change (low-lying, flood-prone, densely populated). Responses focus on adaptation rather than mitigation: building flood shelters, developing early warning systems, breeding flood-resistant and salt-tolerant rice varieties, and coastal embankment construction. International aid and NGOs play a critical role, since Bangladesh's own resources are limited.
Fieldwork connections
Direct fieldwork on fragile environments is rarely possible for students, but Paper 2 may test your ability to analyse secondary data related to climate change and environmental degradation. You might be asked to interpret satellite images showing deforestation over time, analyse climate graphs showing temperature and rainfall trends, or evaluate the effectiveness of a conservation project using data from published reports. Practise describing trends in data sets, explaining what the data shows using your geographical knowledge, and evaluating the limitations of secondary sources.
Common mistakes
- Confusing natural climate change with the enhanced greenhouse effect. Milankovitch cycles, solar variation and volcanism are natural. The enhanced greenhouse effect is human-caused. Exam questions often ask you to distinguish between them.
- Writing about deforestation impacts without connecting to climate change. Trees store carbon; removing them releases it. This link must be stated explicitly.
- One-sided evaluation answers. If the question asks you to evaluate responses to climate change, do not only discuss what works. Acknowledge limitations, costs and barriers, as the Edexcel IGCSE Geography explained answers that score highest always show balance.
