Geography is a subject that connects the physical world beneath your feet to the human decisions that reshape it. Here is how the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE course works, what the exams demand, and how to prepare for them.

Edexcel IGCSE Geography (IGCSE 4GE1) is a two-year linear course designed for students aged 14 to 16. It covers everything from the formation of river valleys and coastal landforms to the forces driving global urbanisation, and from the mechanics of earthquakes to the economics of energy production. The qualification is set and assessed by Pearson, with exams sat by students worldwide.

There is no coursework, no fieldwork portfolio and no practical exam. Everything is assessed through two externally examined papers at the end of the course. This page is your Edexcel IGCSE Geography study guide: what the specification covers, how the papers work, and how to build a revision strategy that delivers results.

What the specification covers

The Edexcel IGCSE Geography specification is divided into two halves: physical geography and human geography. Physical geography deals with natural processes and environments. Human geography deals with how people interact with, exploit and manage those environments. Both halves carry equal intellectual weight, though they are assessed through different papers with different time allocations.

The course spans nine broad sections:

The Edexcel IGCSE Geography syllabus requires students to study named case studies for several topics, including river and coastal management, earthquake hazard responses, energy management and urban sustainability. Examiners reward precise, place-specific detail in extended answers, so vague generalities about "a developing country" will not earn full marks.

The two papers

Both papers are compulsory. There is no choice of tier, no optional questions, and no internal assessment. The Edexcel Geography exam consists of two written papers:

Both papers use a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, data-response and open-ended questions. Paper 2 is longer and carries more marks because it covers a wider range of content. Fieldwork questions can appear on either paper and typically ask about methods of data collection, presentation techniques, and how to evaluate the reliability of geographical enquiry.

You can download the Geography Edexcel specification from the Pearson qualifications website. Every question on the exam must come from what is listed there. If a topic appears in your textbook but not in the specification, it cannot be tested.

Which topics carry the most weight

The full list of Edexcel IGCSE Geography topics spans nine sections, but not all sections receive equal attention on the exam paper. Understanding which areas tend to command the most space helps you allocate revision time wisely, without neglecting anything.

Coastal landforms and processes are among the most reliably examined areas across Paper 1. Questions typically require you to explain how erosional and depositional processes create specific landforms: headlands and bays, cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks and stumps, beaches, spits and bars. The ability to distinguish between constructive and destructive waves, and to explain longshore drift with reference to prevailing wind direction and swash angle, appears with particular regularity. Case studies of coastal management - comparing hard engineering approaches such as sea walls and groynes with soft engineering strategies such as beach replenishment and managed retreat - are essential preparation.

Hazardous environments carry comparable weight. You need to understand the causes of tropical cyclones (ocean temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind shear and the Coriolis force), earthquakes and volcanoes, including plate tectonics and the role of constructive, destructive and conservative plate boundaries, as well as hotspots. The specification also requires you to explain why some countries are more vulnerable than others to the same hazard, drawing on differences in wealth, infrastructure, governance and preparedness. Case studies of earthquake management in both a developed and a developing or emerging country are explicitly required.

Urbanisation is one of the most substantial areas within Paper 2. Questions focus on contrasting trends in urbanisation over the last 50 years across different parts of the world, the factors driving the emergence of megacities, and the challenges that rapid urban growth creates: congestion, transport pressure, employment shortages, crime and environmental degradation. You should be able to discuss urban challenges in both a developed country (food, energy, transport and waste disposal demands, segregation) and a developing or emerging country (squatter settlements, the informal economy, urban pollution), using named examples with specific detail.

Rural environments and ecosystems require knowledge of the world's major biomes and the goods and services that natural ecosystems provide, such as timber, tourism, food, energy, water resources and climate regulation. You also need to understand farming systems (the distinctions between arable and pastoral, commercial and subsistence, intensive and extensive) and the forces driving rural change in both developed and developing contexts, including rural isolation, counter-urbanisation, population growth, changing farm economies and rural-urban migration.

The hydrological cycle and river processes underpin the entire river environments section. You should be comfortable with the concept of a closed system, able to identify the key stores and transfers within the hydrological cycle, and capable of explaining how storm hydrographs are shaped by factors such as precipitation intensity, vegetation cover, land use and urbanisation. The progression of river landforms from source to mouth - from interlocking spurs and waterfalls in the upper course to meanders, oxbow lakes, floodplains and levees in the lower course - is a recurring subject of examination.

Economic sectors and energy are tested through the Clark Fisher Model, which links shifts in employment structure to a country's level of development. You need case studies of economic sector changes and energy resource management in both a developed and a developing or emerging country. The concepts of the energy gap and energy security connect directly to the wider debates about renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and how energy can be managed sustainably through education, efficiency and conservation.

Fragile environments require you to explain the causes and impacts of desertification and deforestation, and to link these to both natural and human-driven climate change. The enhanced greenhouse effect, Milankovitch cycles, solar variation and volcanism are all within scope, alongside the social, economic and environmental consequences that climate change is imposing on fragile regions.

Globalisation and development round out the syllabus with the growth of the global economy, the role of institutions such as the WTO, IMF and TNCs, push-pull migration factors, and the measurement and management of global inequality through measures such as GDP per capita and the Human Development Index.

Case studies are not optional extras. The specification names specific case study requirements for multiple topics. An answer about "a country" with no named place, no specific details and no precise geographical evidence will never earn full marks in an extended response. Prepare at least two contrasting case studies (one developed, one developing or emerging) for each section that requires them.

Fieldwork and geographical enquiry

Fieldwork is integrated into both papers rather than assessed separately. The specification expects you to understand how geographical investigations are planned, carried out and evaluated. This means knowing the steps of geographical enquiry: forming a question or hypothesis, selecting appropriate data collection methods, presenting data using maps, charts and graphs, analysing the results, drawing conclusions, and evaluating the reliability and validity of the investigation.

For Paper 1, fieldwork questions often relate to river studies. You should be able to describe techniques for measuring river velocity (using a flow meter or the float method), channel width and depth (using a tape measure and ranging poles), and bed load size and shape (using calipers and the Powers roundness index). Be prepared to explain sampling strategies and what the limitations of your chosen method might be.

For Paper 2, fieldwork questions may focus on urban or rural investigations. Environmental quality surveys, pedestrian counts, land use mapping and questionnaire design are all within scope. You should be able to explain how to present fieldwork data using appropriate techniques and to evaluate whether your results support your hypothesis.

A study timeline

This assumes a May or June exam series and a student beginning focused revision in January. Adjust the start date depending on where you are in the course.

How to approach Paper 1: Physical Geography

Paper 1 is 1 hour 10 minutes for 70 marks. That gives you exactly one minute per mark, which is tight. Time management matters here more than on Paper 2.

  • Read the resource material carefully. Paper 1 often provides photographs, maps, diagrams or data tables as stimulus. The answer is frequently embedded in the resource, and students who skip straight to writing miss it.
  • Use precise geographical terminology. "The river wears away the bank" is not the same as "hydraulic action and abrasion erode the outer bank of the meander." The second version earns marks; the first does not.
  • Annotate diagrams properly. If asked to draw or label a diagram of a waterfall, an oxbow lake or a spit, make sure your arrows point to exact features and your labels use technical vocabulary.
  • Plan extended answers before writing. A 6-mark or 8-mark question requires structured reasoning, not a stream of consciousness. Write three or four bullet points in the margin before you begin your answer.
  • Fieldwork questions are predictable. Practise describing methods for measuring river velocity, depth, width and discharge. Be ready to explain sampling strategies and to evaluate the limitations of your data collection.

How to approach Paper 2: Human Geography

Paper 2 is 1 hour 45 minutes for 105 marks. The time-per-mark ratio is the same as Paper 1, but the breadth of content is wider. You need to be efficient across six sections plus fieldwork.

  • Do not spend too long on any one section. If a question is worth 4 marks, it should take roughly four minutes. Students who write half a page for a 2-mark question are stealing time from the larger questions at the end.
  • Use named examples at every opportunity. A generic answer about "a megacity" is weaker than an answer about Mumbai or Lagos with specific detail about population growth, transport infrastructure and informal settlements.
  • Data-response questions require more than description. If a question gives you a graph of urbanisation rates and asks you to "explain," you need to go beyond stating the trend. You need to say why it is happening, using geographical processes such as rural-urban migration, natural increase and industrialisation.
  • Know the difference between command words. "Describe" means state what is happening. "Explain" means say why it is happening. "Evaluate" means weigh up different viewpoints or strategies and reach a reasoned conclusion. Misreading the command word is one of the most common ways to lose marks.
  • Fieldwork preparation applies here too. Paper 2 may ask about fieldwork techniques related to urban or rural investigations: questionnaire design, pedestrian counts, environmental quality surveys and land use mapping.

Grading and what the numbers mean

Edexcel IGCSE Geography is graded on the 9-1 scale, where 9 is the highest and 1 is the lowest pass. Edexcel IGCSE Geography grade boundaries shift from session to session depending on the difficulty of the papers. There is no fixed mark that guarantees any particular grade, so always check the most recent grade boundaries on the Pearson website after each session.

Your final grade comes from the combined mark across both papers (70 + 105 = 175 total marks). A strong Paper 2 can compensate for a weaker Paper 1 and vice versa, since the two scores are added together before a grade is assigned.

Quick self-check

Before you consider yourself ready for either paper, make sure you can answer these questions without looking at your notes:

  • Can you draw and label the hydrological cycle, identifying all major stores and transfers?
  • Can you explain how a waterfall forms and retreats, creating a gorge?
  • Can you describe the sequence of events by which a headland is eroded into caves, arches, stacks and stumps?
  • Can you explain why some countries are more vulnerable to earthquake hazards than others?
  • Can you draw and annotate the Clark Fisher Model, explaining the shift from primary to tertiary employment?
  • Can you name two coastal ecosystems and describe their characteristics?
  • Can you give a case study of urban sustainability in a developing country, with specific named details?
  • Can you explain the difference between the Malthus and Boserup theories of population and resources?

If any of those feel uncertain, go back to the relevant section and work through it again before attempting full papers.

Resources worth your time

  • The specification itself. Every exam question must be drawn from the content listed in the specification. If a topic is in your textbook but not there, it will not be tested.
  • Past papers and mark schemes. Available on the Pearson website going back several years. Studying the mark scheme is more valuable than just doing the questions, because it reveals exactly what the examiner was looking for.
  • Examiner reports. Published after each session, these tell you which questions candidates found hardest and the most common errors. They are written clearly and packed with practical advice.

Geography rewards the student who revises actively, not passively. Reading notes is passive. Closing the book and sketching a diagram of longshore drift from memory is active. Explaining the causes of an earthquake to someone who has never studied plate tectonics is active. Writing a practice case study answer under timed conditions is active. The more you force your brain to retrieve information rather than simply recognise it, the more confident you will feel when you sit down with the exam paper in front of you.
