The "Social activities, fitness and health" theme covers five sub-topics that deal with how you spend your time, look after yourself and interact with the world outside school and work.

This is a theme built for practical, everyday German. Whether you are ordering food in a restaurant, explaining symptoms at a pharmacy, talking about your weekend hobbies or describing a birthday celebration, the vocabulary and structures from igcse 4gn1 social activities, fitness and health turn up across all three papers. The five sub-topics are special occasions, hobbies and sports, shopping and money, health issues, and food and drink.

As your Edexcel IGCSE (4GN1) German Social activities, fitness and health guide, these edexcel igcse german revision notes work through each sub-topic with the vocabulary, grammar and exam technique you need. The approach is direct: what does the exam test, how does it test it, and what do you need to produce to earn the marks.

Special occasions

This sub-topic covers celebrations, festivals and events. You need to describe plans for occasions, recount past celebrations and discuss traditions.

GermanEnglishExample
einladento inviteIch habe zwanzig Freunde eingeladen.

Special occasions are a natural context for past tense practice. The edexcel igcse german exam often asks candidates to describe a celebration they have attended. A strong response combines the perfect tense for events ("Wir haben getanzt und gesungen") with the imperfect for background ("Das Essen war lecker und die Stimmung war toll"). Adding future plans shows tense range: "Naechstes Jahr moechte ich meine Party im Freien feiern" (Next year I would like to have my party outdoors).

Grammar tip: "einladen" is separable and irregular. Present: "Ich lade dich ein" (I invite you). Perfect: "Ich habe dich eingeladen" (I invited you). In a subordinate clause: "Er sagt, dass er mich einlaed" (He says that he is inviting me). Getting separable verbs right in all positions is a concrete way to demonstrate grammatical control.

Hobbies, interests, sports and exercise

This is one of the broadest sub-topics. You need vocabulary for leisure activities, sports, indoor and outdoor hobbies, and the ability to express preferences and explain why you enjoy (or dislike) particular activities.

GermanEnglish
Sport treibento do sport
Fussball / Tennis / Basketball spielento play football / tennis / basketball
schwimmen gehento go swimming
Rad fahrento cycle
lesen / zeichnen / malento read / to draw / to paint
Musik hoeren / ein Instrument spielento listen to music / to play an instrument
fernsehento watch television
sich entspannento relax
Mitglied eines Vereins seinto be a member of a club

The key grammatical structure for hobbies is "gern" + verb: "Ich spiele gern Fussball" (I like playing football). For stronger preferences: "Ich spiele am liebsten Tennis" (I like playing tennis best of all). For dislikes: "Ich schwimme nicht gern" (I do not like swimming). The "gern / lieber / am liebsten" progression is a straightforward way to demonstrate comparative and superlative adverb use.

For the speaking exam, hobbies is a topic where you can prepare detailed, personal answers. Practise explaining why you enjoy an activity, how often you do it, and who you do it with: "Ich spiele zweimal pro Woche Basketball in einem Verein. Es gefaellt mir, weil es ein Mannschaftssport ist und ich gern im Team arbeite. Letztes Jahr haben wir sogar ein Turnier gewonnen" (I play basketball twice a week in a club. I like it because it is a team sport and I enjoy working in a team. Last year we even won a tournament).

Shopping and money matters

This sub-topic covers shopping transactions, spending habits and attitudes to money. It provides some of the most transactional language in the specification.

  • einkaufen gehen (to go shopping): "Am Samstag gehe ich mit meiner Mutter einkaufen."
  • der Laden / das Geschaeft (shop/store): "In meiner Stadt gibt es viele kleine Geschaefte."
  • das Sonderangebot (special offer): "Ich kaufe gern Sachen im Sonderangebot."
  • das Taschengeld (pocket money): "Ich bekomme zwanzig Euro Taschengeld pro Woche."
  • sparen (to save money): "Ich spare fuer ein neues Fahrrad."
  • ausgeben (to spend money): "Ich gebe zu viel Geld fuer Kleidung aus."
  • die Kasse (checkout/till): "An der Kasse muss man manchmal lange warten."

Shopping scenarios appear in role-play tasks (Paper 3) and in reading/listening comprehension (Papers 1 and 2). For role plays, practise transactional phrases: "Haben Sie das in einer anderen Groesse?" (Do you have that in another size?), "Kann ich das umtauschen?" (Can I exchange this?), "Das ist zu teuer" (That is too expensive).

For writing and speaking tasks about money, connect spending habits to opinions: "Meiner Meinung nach sollte man nicht zu viel Geld fuer Markenkleidung ausgeben. Es ist besser, Geld zu sparen oder es fuer Erlebnisse auszugeben, zum Beispiel fuer Reisen" (In my opinion, you should not spend too much money on branded clothing. It is better to save money or to spend it on experiences, for example on travel).

Accidents, injuries, common ailments and health issues

This sub-topic covers describing symptoms, seeking medical help and discussing healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. The body parts vocabulary is essential, along with phrases for describing pain and illness.

GermanEnglishPhrase for symptoms

The pattern "Ich habe + [body part]schmerzen" (I have [body part] pain) is the most common way to describe symptoms. For more specific descriptions: "Mir ist schlecht" (I feel sick/nauseous), "Mir ist schwindelig" (I feel dizzy), "Ich habe mich erkältet" (I have caught a cold). Note that "mir ist" constructions use the dative case.

For healthy/unhealthy lifestyle discussions, practise balanced arguments: "Um gesund zu bleiben, sollte man regelmaessig Sport treiben, genuegend Wasser trinken und genug schlafen. Es ist auch wichtig, nicht zu viel Zucker und Fett zu essen" (To stay healthy, you should exercise regularly, drink enough water and sleep enough. It is also important not to eat too much sugar and fat).

Food and drink

This sub-topic covers meals, eating habits, food preferences and food culture in German-speaking countries. It overlaps with the health sub-topic but focuses more on cuisine and daily eating patterns.

  • das Fruehstueck / das Mittagessen / das Abendessen (breakfast / lunch / dinner)
  • das Gericht (dish/course): "Mein Lieblingsgericht ist Schnitzel mit Pommes."
  • bestellen (to order): "Ich moechte ein Stueck Kuchen bestellen."
  • die Speisekarte (menu): "Darf ich bitte die Speisekarte sehen?"
  • vegetarisch / vegan: "Haben Sie vegetarische Gerichte?"
  • schmecken (to taste): "Das schmeckt sehr gut!"
  • die Rechnung (bill): "Die Rechnung, bitte."

Restaurant scenarios are a favourite for role-play tasks in Paper 3. Practise the full sequence: greeting ("Guten Tag, einen Tisch fuer zwei, bitte"), ordering ("Ich haette gern..."), asking about dishes ("Was koennen Sie empfehlen?"), paying ("Kann ich bitte zahlen?"). The polite conditional "Ich haette gern" (I would like) and "Koennten Sie" (Could you) earn marks for appropriate register and range.

For writing tasks about food culture, compare German and your own eating habits: "In Deutschland isst man oft Brot mit Kaese oder Wurst zum Fruehstueck, waehrend man in meinem Land eher warmes Essen fruehstueckt. Ich finde die deutsche Tradition gesund, weil sie einfach und nahrhaft ist" (In Germany, people often eat bread with cheese or cold meat for breakfast, while in my country people tend to eat hot food for breakfast. I find the German tradition healthy because it is simple and nutritious).

Common mistakes in the Social activities, fitness and health theme

  • Confusing "gern" (gladly/with pleasure) with "gerne" in position. Both work, but the adverb must come after the verb: "Ich spiele gern Tennis," not "Ich gern spiele Tennis." In subordinate clauses: "Ich weiss, dass er gern Tennis spielt."
  • Using the wrong verb for sports. You "spielen" ball games and board games ("Fussball spielen," "Schach spielen") but you "treiben" sport in general ("Sport treiben") and you "machen" activities like gymnastics ("Gymnastik machen"). "Ich spiele Schwimmen" is wrong; "Ich gehe schwimmen" is correct.
  • Forgetting the dative with "mir ist." "Mir ist kalt" (I am cold), "Mir ist schlecht" (I feel ill). Using the accusative ("Mich ist kalt") is a grammar error that loses marks.
  • Listing food without opinion or structure. "Ich esse Brot, Kaese, Obst, Gemuese" is a list, not an answer. Extend: "Zum Fruehstueck esse ich normalerweise Brot mit Kaese, weil es schnell geht. Mittags esse ich in der Schulkantine, und abends kocht meine Mutter ein warmes Gericht."

Practice questions for self-checking

  1. Erzaehle von einer besonderen Feier, die du besucht hast. Was hat dir am besten gefallen? (Tell about a special celebration you attended. What did you like best?)
  2. Was machst du in deiner Freizeit? Was wuerdest du gern ausprobieren? (What do you do in your free time? What would you like to try?)
  3. Wie bleibst du gesund? Was koenntest du besser machen? (How do you stay healthy? What could you do better?)
  4. Bestelle in einem Restaurant ein komplettes Essen fuer dich und einen Freund. (Order a complete meal in a restaurant for yourself and a friend.)
Model answer for question 2: "In meiner Freizeit spiele ich am liebsten Gitarre und hoere Musik. Ausserdem gehe ich zweimal pro Woche zum Schwimmtraining. Am Wochenende treffe ich mich oft mit Freunden, und wir gehen ins Kino oder spielen Videospiele. Ich wuerde gern Klettern ausprobieren, weil es spannend aussieht und weil man gleichzeitig fit wird." This response uses the present tense for habits, a conditional (wuerde gern), opinion language (am liebsten, spannend), and time expressions (zweimal pro Woche, am Wochenende), which together show the range the edexcel igcse german practice questions criteria reward.

The social activities, fitness and health edexcel igcse theme gives you the vocabulary for some of the most natural, everyday conversations in German. These edexcel igcse german notes cover the structures you need for all five sub-topics. Every edexcel igcse german explained answer in this area benefits from concrete detail, opinion language and a mix of tenses. Build on this foundation by practising real-world scenarios: order a meal in German at home, describe your weekend hobbies out loud, or write a short paragraph about a recent celebration.
