Social activities, fitness and health is one of the five thematic areas in the Edexcel IGCSE (4FR1) French specification. It covers celebrations, hobbies, shopping, health, and food, and the vocabulary here is among the most practical you will learn.

This theme spans five sub-topics: special occasions, hobbies, interests, sports and exercise, shopping and money matters, accidents, injuries, common ailments and health issues, and food and drink. Each of these feeds directly into the kind of language you encounter in everyday French, and each appears regularly across all three exam papers. The social activities, fitness and health edexcel igcse area tests your ability to describe activities, express preferences, and discuss health and lifestyle choices. These edexcel igcse french revision notes give you the vocabulary, grammar, and worked examples you need for each sub-topic.

Special occasions

You should be able to describe celebrations, discuss traditions, and talk about plans for events. Birthdays, weddings, religious festivals, and national holidays all fall within this sub-topic.

Vocabulary for celebrations

FrenchEnglish
un anniversairea birthday
un mariagea wedding
NoelChristmas
le Nouvel An / la Saint-SylvestreNew Year / New Year's Eve
la fete nationalenational holiday
offrir un cadeauto give a gift
feter / celebrerto celebrate
un gateaua cake
les invitesthe guests
faire la feteto party/celebrate

Narrating a special occasion

A worked example using multiple tenses:

Pour mon anniversaire l'annee derniere, mes parents ont organise une fete chez nous. Il y avait vingt invites et on a mange un enorme gateau au chocolat. C'etait genial parce que tous mes amis etaient la. L'annee prochaine, j'aimerais feter mon anniversaire dans un restaurant.

This response demonstrates the passe compose for specific events (ont organise, a mange), the imperfect for descriptions and background (il y avait, etaient, c'etait), and the conditional for future wishes (j'aimerais). This kind of tense interplay earns high marks in the igcse 4fr1 social activities, fitness and health section.

Hobbies, interests, sports and exercise

This is one of the broadest sub-topics and one that appears in almost every speaking conversation. You need vocabulary for a wide range of activities and the grammar to say what you do, how often, with whom, and why you enjoy it.

Sports and leisure vocabulary

FrenchEnglish
jouer au football / au tennisto play football / tennis
faire de la natationto go swimming
faire du veloto go cycling
faire de l'equitationto go horse riding
la lecturereading
le dessindrawing
la musiquemusic
jouer de la guitare / du pianoto play guitar / piano
un matcha match
un tournoia tournament
s'entrainerto train/practise
Grammar tip. French uses different prepositions for sports depending on the verb. Jouer takes a + article (jouer au football, jouer aux cartes). Faire takes de + article (faire de la natation, faire du ski). Jouer with musical instruments takes de + article (jouer de la guitare). Mixing these up is a common error that the edexcel igcse french explained criteria penalise for accuracy.

Frequency expressions

Add these to your responses to show range: tous les jours (every day), deux fois par semaine (twice a week), le week-end (at the weekend), de temps en temps (from time to time), rarement (rarely).

Shopping and money matters

This sub-topic tests your ability to handle shopping transactions, describe purchasing experiences, and discuss attitudes to spending. It is highly practical and often appears in Paper 3 role-plays.

Shopping vocabulary

  • un magasin - a shop
  • un centre commercial - a shopping centre
  • une boutique - a boutique/small shop
  • acheter - to buy
  • vendre - to sell
  • depenser - to spend (money)
  • les soldes - the sales
  • une reduction - a discount
  • l'argent de poche - pocket money
  • economiser - to save (money)

Role-play language for shops

In a Paper 3 role-play, you might need to buy clothes, ask about sizes, or return an item:

  • Je voudrais essayer ce pull en taille M, s'il vous plait. (I would like to try this jumper in size M, please.)
  • Avez-vous cette jupe en bleu? (Do you have this skirt in blue?)
  • C'est combien? (How much is it?)
  • Je peux payer par carte? (Can I pay by card?)
  • Je voudrais echanger cet article parce qu'il est trop petit. (I would like to exchange this item because it is too small.)

Accidents, injuries, common ailments and health issues

This sub-topic requires you to describe symptoms, seek medical help, and discuss healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. Body parts, ailments, and medical vocabulary are all essential here.

Health vocabulary

FrenchEnglish
avoir mal a la teteto have a headache
avoir mal au ventreto have a stomachache
avoir mal a la gorgeto have a sore throat
avoir de la fievreto have a fever
tousserto cough
etre enrhume(e)to have a cold
se casser la jambe / le brasto break one's leg / arm
un medicamenta medicine
une ordonnancea prescription
le/la medecinthe doctor
Common mistake. The expression avoir mal a changes the article depending on the body part: avoir mal a la tete (feminine), avoir mal au dos (masculine, a + le = au), avoir mal aux dents (plural, a + les = aux). Candidates who write avoir mal a le dos lose marks for a basic contraction error. Make sure you contract correctly every time.

Discussing healthy and unhealthy lifestyles

Pour rester en bonne sante, il faut manger equilibre, faire du sport regulierement et dormir au moins huit heures par nuit. Il ne faut pas fumer ni boire trop d'alcool.

The il faut / il ne faut pas construction is perfect for giving health advice. It is impersonal, direct, and shows the examiner you can use this structure confidently.

Food and drink

This sub-topic covers meals, eating habits, food preferences, and food culture in French-speaking countries. It is closely tied to both health and customs, so it bridges several areas of the specification.

Food vocabulary by category

CategoryExamples
Fruitsune pomme, une banane, des fraises, des cerises, un ananas
Vegetablesles legumes, une carotte, des haricots verts, une salade, un oignon
Meat and fishle poulet, le boeuf, l'agneau, le poisson, les fruits de mer
Dairyle fromage, le lait, le beurre, un yaourt, la creme
Drinksl'eau, le jus d'orange, le cafe, le the, une limonade
Mealsle petit dejeuner, le dejeuner, le gouter, le diner

Partitive articles

When talking about food, you must use partitive articles: du (masculine), de la (feminine), de l' (before a vowel), des (plural). After a negative, all partitives become de/d':

  • Je mange du pain et de la confiture le matin.
  • Je ne mange pas de viande parce que je suis vegetarien(ne).

Forgetting the partitive change after negation is one of the most frequent grammar errors in the edexcel igcse french notes for this theme. It is a small detail that examiners look for specifically.

Talking about French food culture

When discussing food in a French-speaking context, a few cultural details can enrich your responses: the tradition of the long family lunch, the importance of cheese in a meal, the baguette as a daily staple, and the difference between French and British meal times. En France, le dejeuner est le repas principal de la journee. On mange souvent une entree, un plat principal, du fromage et un dessert. This kind of cultural awareness shows examiners you understand the context, not just the vocabulary.

Exam technique across the theme

Paper 1 (Listening): Passages about leisure activities, health appointments, and restaurant orders are common. Listen for specific details: times, quantities, and preferences. A question might ask what someone ordered, which requires you to distinguish between similar-sounding food words.

Paper 2 (Reading and Writing): Reading texts about sport, healthy eating, or a shopping trip test vocabulary breadth. In writing tasks, you might write a letter about your hobbies, describe what you ate on holiday, or discuss the importance of exercise. Use opinion phrases and reasons to push your marks up.

Paper 3 (Speaking): Role-plays at a restaurant, a shop, or a doctor's surgery are standard scenarios for this edexcel exam theme. Prepare transactional language and practise handling unexpected questions. For the conversation section, be ready to discuss your hobbies, your diet, how you stay healthy, and celebrations you enjoy.

Self-check: edexcel igcse french practice questions

Write your answers in French. Aim for three sentences minimum. Include an opinion and at least two tenses where possible.

  • Decrivez une fete ou une celebration que vous avez appreciee recemment. (Describe a celebration you enjoyed recently.)
  • Quels sont vos passe-temps preferes? Pourquoi les aimez-vous? (What are your favourite hobbies? Why do you like them?)
  • Decrivez votre derniere visite dans un magasin. Qu'avez-vous achete? (Describe your last trip to a shop. What did you buy?)
  • Que mangez-vous pour rester en bonne sante? (What do you eat to stay healthy?)
  • Avez-vous eu un probleme de sante recemment? Qu'est-ce qui s'est passe? (Have you had a health problem recently? What happened?)

The edexcel igcse french social activities, fitness and health area is a theme where everyday vocabulary goes a long way. The language you need for describing a meal, buying clothes, or talking about your favourite sport is practical and reusable across many exam questions. Build your vocabulary systematically, practise the partitive articles until they are automatic, and use these practice questions to test yourself regularly. Consistent, targeted practice is what turns edexcel igcse french revision notes into exam results.
