Abiathar helped David by bringing him the ephod, a garment worn by the priest that had two small pouches containing the Urim and Thummim, which were used for divination to seek God's will. Through the ephod, David sought God's direction, and God told him to pursue the Amalekites and promised him victory. Therefore, David made the decision to pursue the Amalekites through seeking God's guidance with the help of the priest and the use of divination with the ephod.
