The IGCSE 4GE1 rural environments section spans three areas: the natural ecosystems that humans exploit, the contrasting characteristics and changes affecting rural areas in different parts of the world, and the strategies needed to make rural life sustainable. These Edexcel IGCSE Geography notes take you through each area step by step, with case study examples, common pitfalls and self-check questions to build your confidence.

World biomes

The specification requires knowledge of the distributions and characteristics of the world's major biomes. A biome is a large-scale ecosystem defined by its climate, vegetation and soil type.

Ecosystem goods and services

Natural ecosystems provide a range of goods and services that people depend on. The specification lists timber, tourism, food, energy, water resources, health services, natural protection and climate regulation. A tropical rainforest, for instance, absorbs carbon dioxide (climate regulation), provides hardwood timber (goods), supports ecotourism (services), contains plants used in medicine (health) and regulates water flow by intercepting rainfall and releasing it slowly (water resources and protection).

The important thing for the exam is to be specific. Do not just write "ecosystems provide resources." Name the ecosystem, name the resource, and explain the connection. As Edexcel IGCSE Geography explained answers make clear, precision is what separates a good response from a generic one.

Farming systems

Humans modify ecosystems to produce food through farming. The specification requires you to understand three pairs of contrasts:

  • Arable vs pastoral: Arable farming grows crops; pastoral farming raises livestock. Mixed farming combines both.
  • Commercial vs subsistence: Commercial farming produces food for sale and profit; subsistence farming produces just enough to feed the farmer's family.
  • Intensive vs extensive: Intensive farming uses high inputs (labour, capital, technology) per unit of land to maximise output. Extensive farming uses low inputs over a large area. A rice paddy in Southeast Asia is intensive and may be subsistence; a cattle ranch in Australia is extensive and commercial.
Exam tip: Exam questions often ask you to classify a described farming system. Read the description carefully. If the farm is small, uses family labour and produces food mainly for the family, it is subsistence. If it covers thousands of hectares, uses machinery and sells its output, it is commercial. The labels are not mutually exclusive - a farm can be both arable and intensive, or both pastoral and extensive.

Rural change in a developed country

The specification requires you to understand factors leading to rural change in a named developed country. England provides a well-documented case.

  • Rural isolation: Remote villages lose services (post offices, shops, bus routes, schools) as populations decline, making them less attractive to younger residents.
  • Decline in farm employment: Mechanisation and consolidation of farms reduce the number of agricultural jobs, pushing workers toward towns and cities.
  • Tourist pressures: Popular rural areas (the Lake District, the Cotswolds) face congestion, footpath erosion, litter and rising house prices that price out local residents.
  • Suburbanisation: Urban growth spills into surrounding rural areas, converting farmland into housing estates and retail parks.
  • Counter-urbanisation: Wealthier urban residents move to rural villages for a perceived better quality of life, pushing up house prices and changing the character of communities. Commuter villages develop where residents work in nearby cities but live in the countryside.
  • Negative multiplier effect: As people leave a rural area, services close; as services close, more people leave. This downward spiral can hollow out entire communities.

Rural change in a developing or emerging country

The specification also requires a named developing or emerging country. Ethiopia works well as a case study.

  • Population growth: Rapid population growth places pressure on limited agricultural land, leading to smaller farm plots, overgrazing and soil exhaustion.
  • Changing farm economy and landholdings: Traditional communal land is being converted to commercial agriculture, displacing smallholders. Foreign investment in large-scale farming (land-grabbing) can benefit the national economy but harm local communities.
  • Natural hazards: Drought, flooding and soil erosion degrade productive land, reducing crop yields and threatening food security.
  • Rural-urban migration: Young people leave for cities (Addis Ababa) in search of employment and education, leaving an ageing rural population with fewer workers to farm the land.

Sustainable rural strategies

The specification asks about strategies for making rural environments more sustainable and improving quality of life. These include:

Farm diversification:

  • GM crops (genetically modified to resist pests or tolerate drought, controversial but effective at increasing yields in some contexts)
  • Specialist crops and food (organic produce, local varieties that command premium prices)
  • Organic farming (no synthetic fertilisers or pesticides; better for biodiversity and soil health, but typically lower yields)
  • Recreation and leisure (farm tourism, bed-and-breakfast accommodation, farm shops, nature trails)

Broader sustainability strategies aim to improve soil and air quality, water supplies, crop yields, health, employment and housing. These include irrigation projects, soil conservation techniques (terracing, contour ploughing), reforestation, access to clean water, improved healthcare and investment in rural infrastructure such as roads and schools.

Different groups play different roles: national and local governments set policies and allocate budgets; IGOs (such as the World Bank or FAO) provide funding and expertise; NGOs (such as Oxfam or WaterAid) deliver projects at community level; and local communities contribute labour, knowledge and ownership of the outcomes.

You need case studies of rural environments in both a developed country and a developing or emerging country. For a developed-country case, the UK's Environmental Stewardship scheme pays farmers to manage their land in environmentally friendly ways (planting hedgerows, creating wildlife corridors, reducing chemical use). For a developing-country case, the Great Green Wall initiative in the Sahel aims to combat desertification by planting a belt of trees across the width of Africa, combining ecosystem restoration with agricultural improvement and job creation.

The role of different stakeholders

The specification asks about the role of different groups in managing rural challenges. National governments set agricultural policy, fund infrastructure and enforce environmental regulations. Local governments manage planning permissions and deliver services. IGOs such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization provide technical expertise and funding for agricultural development. NGOs like Practical Action work directly with rural communities to implement small-scale, appropriate technology solutions such as improved cookstoves, rainwater harvesting and solar-powered irrigation. Local communities are essential because top-down projects that ignore local knowledge and priorities tend to fail. The most effective sustainability strategies combine external funding and expertise with genuine community participation and ownership.

Fieldwork connections

Paper 2 may test fieldwork related to rural investigations. You might be asked about techniques such as land use mapping (recording different uses on a base map), environmental quality surveys (scoring factors like noise, litter, vegetation cover and building condition), or questionnaires designed to investigate how residents feel about rural change. Be ready to explain sampling strategies and how you would evaluate the limitations of your data. Edexcel IGCSE Geography rural environments fieldwork questions often ask you to justify your choice of data presentation method, so practise matching techniques (bar charts, pie charts, choropleth maps) to the type of data collected.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing biomes with ecosystems. A biome is a global-scale classification (tropical rainforest). An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment at any scale (a pond, a hedgerow, a forest). All biomes contain ecosystems, but the terms are not interchangeable.
  • Listing farming types without explaining the contrasts. The exam rewards your ability to compare. "Subsistence farming produces food for the family; commercial farming produces food for profit" is better than simply defining each one separately.
  • Weak sustainability answers. Do not just list strategies. Explain how each one improves quality of life and evaluate who benefits and who might lose out. The rural environments Edexcel IGCSE mark scheme rewards balanced evaluation.
