Biology is one of those subjects that rewards curiosity as much as discipline. Here is how the Edexcel IGCSE specification works, what the exams look like, and how to prepare for them.
Edexcel IGCSE Biology (4BI1) is a two-year course designed for students aged 14 to 16. It covers how living organisms are built, how they function, how they reproduce and evolve, and how they interact with the world around them. If you have ever looked at a leaf under a lamp and wondered what is actually happening inside it, this is the course that answers that question properly.
The specification is set by Pearson, and the exams are sat worldwide. There is no coursework and no practical exam. Everything is assessed through two written papers at the end of the course. What the specification covers
The content falls into five broad sections, each building on the one before:

Section 2, "Structure and functions in living organisms," is the backbone of the course. It carries ten topics and connects to nearly everything else. If your Edexcel Biology revision time is limited, this is where depth pays the most.
The two papers: what to expect
Both papers are compulsory. There is no choice of tier and no optional questions.

Paper 1 is the longer exam, but the marks-per-minute ratio is roughly the same across both. The practical difference is that Paper 2 expects you to think on your feet. Where Paper 1 might ask you to describe the process of osmosis, Paper 2 might hand you data from an experiment you have never seen and ask you to explain the results using what you know about osmosis.
Topics that carry the most weight
Not every topic turns up with the same regularity. Some areas are examined almost every session across both papers; others appear less frequently but still matter for a complete understanding. Knowing which topics sit in the first group helps you prioritise without ignoring the rest.
Nutrition is the single most reliably examined area. Digestion, enzymes, the alimentary canal, absorption in the small intestine, and the role of each nutrient type. If you can draw and label the digestive system from memory and explain what happens at each stage, you are covering ground that turns up on nearly every paper.
Transport runs a close second. The heart, blood vessels, blood composition, the circulatory system, transpiration in plants, and osmosis. Expect at least one substantial question on transport in every sitting. Many students lose marks here not because they do not understand the biology, but because they confuse arteries with veins or forget that transpiration is a pull, not a push.
Reproduction and Inheritance is where the specification covers DNA structure, mitosis, meiosis, genetic crosses and natural selection. Punnett squares and the ability to predict offspring ratios from a monohybrid cross are among the most predictable question types in the whole exam.
Coordination and Response covers the nervous system, reflex arcs, hormones and homeostasis. The detail matters here. You need to know the difference between a sensory neuron and a relay neuron, and you need to be able to trace a nerve impulse from receptor to effector without hesitating.
Below those, Feeding Relationships, Food Production and Human Influences on the Environment appear regularly but carry slightly less cumulative weight. They are worth solid revision, not the kind of frantic last-minute cramming that wastes time.
How to approach Paper 1
Paper 1 is 2 hours for 110 marks. That gives you just over a minute per mark, which sounds comfortable until you hit a 6-mark extended response and realise you need to plan it, not just start writing.
- Read the whole question before writing anything. Some questions have three or four parts that build on each other. If you misread part (a), everything after it drifts.
- For diagram questions, label precisely. An arrow pointing vaguely at the middle of a cell is not the same as an arrow pointing at the cell membrane. Examiners cannot award marks for ambiguous labelling.
- Use the mark allocation as a guide. A 1-mark question needs one clear point. A 4-mark question needs four distinct points, not the same point phrased four different ways.
- Show your working in calculations. If you are calculating magnification or a percentage increase, write the formula, substitute the values and show the arithmetic. A correct final answer with no working gets the marks; an incorrect final answer with correct working still picks up method marks.
How to approach Paper 2
Paper 2 is 1 hour 15 minutes for 70 marks, and it covers the extended (B) material on top of everything in Paper 1. The questions tend to be more applied. You might be given a table of results from a field study and asked to calculate a population estimate using the capture-recapture method, or given a graph of enzyme activity and asked to explain why the rate falls above a certain temperature.
- Practise data interpretation. The skill Paper 2 tests most is your ability to read a graph, identify a trend, and explain it using biology. "The rate increases because..." is the sentence pattern you will write more than any other.
- Do not restate the question. If the question asks "Explain why the rate of photosynthesis decreases above 40 degrees," do not begin with "The rate of photosynthesis decreases above 40 degrees because..." That opening wastes time and adds no marks. Start with the reason.
- Extended (B) material is not harder, just deeper. It covers topics like the kidney, hormonal control of blood glucose, and monoclonal antibodies. The biology is more detailed, but the question style is the same. If you have revised the B material properly, Paper 2 should not feel like a different exam.
A revision timeline that works
This assumes a May or June exam series and a student beginning focused revision in January. Adjust the start date forward or back depending on where you are.

Common mistakes to watch for
- Confusing diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles from high to low concentration. Osmosis is the movement of water across a partially permeable membrane from a dilute to a concentrated solution. Active transport moves substances against the concentration gradient and requires energy. If you can state those three definitions from memory and give an example of each, you have covered one of the most commonly tested distinctions in the whole specification.
- Writing "it" without saying what "it" is. "It increases" does not earn a mark. "The rate of respiration increases" does. Examiners penalise vague pronoun use heavily, especially in extended responses.
- Incomplete enzyme explanations. Saying "the enzyme is denatured" is not enough. You need to say that the active site changes shape so the substrate can no longer fit, which is why the reaction rate drops. The mechanism matters, not just the label.
- Forgetting units. If the question asks for a rate and your calculation gives 0.5, write 0.5 cm3/min or 0.5 g/s, not just 0.5. Missing units is a free mark thrown away.
Grading and what the numbers mean
Edexcel IGCSE Biology is graded on the 9-1 scale, where 9 is the highest and 1 is the lowest pass. Edexcel IGCSE Biology grade boundaries shift from session to session depending on the difficulty of the paper, so there is no fixed percentage that guarantees a grade. As a rough guide, a 9 typically requires around 85% of the total marks, a 7 around 65%, and a 4 (the standard pass) around 35-40%. Check the most recent grade boundaries on the Pearson website after each session, because these thresholds do move.
The total across both papers is 180 marks (110 + 70). Your final grade comes from the combined mark, not from each paper separately, so a strong Paper 1 can compensate for a weaker Paper 2 and vice versa.
Resources worth your time
- The specification itself. Download the Edexcel IGCSE Biology specification from the Pearson website. Every exam question must come from what is listed there. If a topic is in your textbook but not in the specification, it cannot be tested.
- Edexcel IGCSE Biology past papers and mark schemes. Available on the Pearson website going back several years. Do not just read the questions; study the mark schemes carefully. They tell you exactly what the examiner was looking for, and that is not always what you might expect.
- Examiner reports. Published after each session, these tell you which questions candidates found hardest and the most common errors. They are surprisingly readable and full of practical advice.

Biology rewards the student who revises actively, not passively. Reading notes is passive. Closing the book and writing out the stages of mitosis from memory is active. Drawing a diagram of the heart and labelling it without peeking is active. Explaining photosynthesis out loud to someone who has never heard of it is active. The more you force your brain to retrieve information rather than simply recognise it, the better it sticks, and the more confident you will feel when you open that exam paper.
