  5. Leave time to check your work. Aim to finish with 10 minutes to spare. Use that time to re-read your calculation answers (did you include units? did you round correctly?) and your extended responses (did you actually answer the question asked?).

How to approach Paper 2

Paper 2 is 1 hour 15 minutes for 70 marks. It tests the entire specification, including the extended (C) material that goes beyond Paper 1. The questions are more demanding. Where Paper 1 might ask you to state what happens when sodium is placed in water, Paper 2 might give you data from an experiment with an unfamiliar metal and ask you to predict its position in the reactivity series.

  • Practise data interpretation. Paper 2 frequently presents tables, graphs or experimental results that you have never seen before. Your job is to apply what you know to unfamiliar data. The biology is the same; the context is new.
