The Israelites had just left Egypt and were on their way to the Promised Land. The way of the land of the Philistines was the shorter route, but it was also the more dangerous route because of the presence of the Philistines who were known for their military might. God knew that if the Israelites encountered war at this early stage, they might lose heart and return to Egypt. Therefore, He led them by a longer route through the wilderness, where they could learn and grow stronger before facing the challenges ahead.
