Ada was the brightest pupil in our village primary school, yet fate seemed determined to keep her out of the classroom. The secondary school fees were far beyond her family's reach. Her uncles, who had money, turned deaf ears to her mother's pleas, saying it was a waste to train a girl. Many people in the village advised Ada to learn a trade and forget about school. But Ada had made up her mind. "I will go to school," she told her mother quietly, "even if I have to work with my own hands to pay for it."

And work she did. Every morning before dawn, Ada fried and sold bean cakes at the motor park. After school, she hawked oranges along the busy road until nightfall.
