Paul said he persecuted the church of God at first because he was extremely zealous for the tradition of his fathers. In Galatians 1:14, Paul explains that he "was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers." He believed that the Christian movement was a threat to the Jewish faith and way of life, and therefore sought to suppress it through persecution.
