In mammals, fertilization usually occurs in the oviduct, also known as the fallopian tube.
After the egg is released from the ovary, it travels through the oviduct, which is where it may encounter sperm. If there is a viable sperm present, fertilization can occur within the oviduct. The fertilized egg then travels down the oviduct towards the uterus, where it will implant and develop into a fetus. The cervix is the opening between the uterus and the vagina, and the vagina is the muscular canal that connects the cervix to the external environment. While the sperm may travel through the vagina to reach the oviduct, fertilization itself does not occur in either the vagina or the cervix.
