The amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1914 by Lord Lugard was to make for administrative convenience. The colonial administration believed that a unified administration of Nigeria would be more efficient and less expensive to run than two separate administrations for the North and South. This amalgamation created the modern-day Nigeria, bringing together the different ethnic and cultural groups into one political entity. However, it also had negative consequences, including the suppression of the identities of the different regions and the imposition of a centralized system of government that favored the North over the South.
