The type of ration that supplies the animal with just the quantity of nutrients that are enough to enable the animal to carry on with vital body activities without losing or gaining another substance is called the "maintenance ration." A production ration is designed to provide nutrients for specific animal production goals, such as milk production or weight gain. A balanced ration is formulated to provide all the necessary nutrients in appropriate amounts to meet the animal's needs. A measured ration is a ration in which feed ingredients are weighed or measured out in specific amounts to meet the animal's nutrient requirements.
