Assessment: WAEC SSCE - Chemistry - 1989 (Objective) Subject: Chemistry

Question 1 Report

(a) Write the formula of the oxide of nitrogen in which nitrogen has oxidation number of (i) +1;

(ii) +2;

(iii) +3;

(iv) +4;

(b) State which of the oxides in (a) above is/are: (i) acidic (ii) neutral.

Answer Details

(a) Oxides of nitrogen by oxidation number of nitrogen:

  • (i) +1: N\(_2\)O (dinitrogen oxide).
  • (ii) +2: NO (nitrogen(II) oxide / nitrogen monoxide).
  • (iii) +3: N\(_2\)O\(_3\) (dinitrogen trioxide).
  • (iv) +4: NO\(_2\) (nitrogen(IV) oxide / nitrogen dioxide).

(b) Classification:

  • (i) Acidic: N\(_2\)O\(_3\) and NO\(_2\) (they react with water/alkalis to form acids or salts).
  • (ii) Neutral: N\(_2\)O and NO (they are neither acidic nor basic).
