Answer Details
In literature, the purging or purification of emotions of pity and fear in tragedy is called "catharsis". This concept was introduced by Aristotle in his "Poetics". According to him, the aim of tragedy is to produce a cathartic effect on the audience, which means that they are able to experience a release or purification of these emotions through witnessing the tragic events on stage. In this way, the audience is able to achieve a sense of emotional balance and clarity, leading to a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them.
