Why Was There A Civil War In The United States And What Were Its Results?

Akopọ

By 1861 the United States had split in two. Eleven Southern states broke away to form their own Confederacy, the guns opened fire on a small island fort in Charleston harbour, and a quarrel that had simmered for forty years over slavery, states' rights and the future of the West became the bloodiest war in American history. Around 620,000 soldiers would die before it ended. Why did a single country tear itself apart, and what did all that suffering actually change?

This lesson untangles the long-running differences between an industrial North and a slave-owning South, the election of 1860 that lit the fuse, and the reasons the North was eventually able to win. It then weighs the results: emancipation and the end of legal slavery set against the unfinished, half-kept promises of Reconstruction. By the end you will be able to argue, with evidence on both sides, how far the war really changed the United States.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. How far did slavery cause the Civil War?
  2. What was the significance of Lincoln’s election as president?
  3. Why was the North able to win the war?
  4. Did the war change anything?
  5. Causes and consequences of the American Civil War, 1820-77: - differences between North and South - slavery, slave states and free states, abolitionism - the 1860 election and secession of the Southern states - reasons for the North’s victory and the South’s defeat - the role of Lincoln - reconstruction and the extent of its success

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The American Civil War (1861-65) is the moment the United States decided, in blood, whether it would remain one nation and whether it could go on being half-slave and half-free. The answers shaped the modern country: a stronger federal government, the legal end of slavery, and a struggle over the rights of freed people that ran on long after the fighting stopped. For the CIE exam you must be able to explain the causes, judge why the North won, and reach a balanced verdict on how much the war changed.
